A pharmacy job at Sam’s Club in Washington DC could be paying $35 an hour.
The company, which has about 2,000 workers, says the salary is based on a three-year plan, which starts at $13,200 and can go up to $18,400, or $40,000.
Employees will be able to work on the side, or work in an hourly position, and will be eligible for a 401(k) match for the entire five-year term.
The health and wellness company has been testing its new pharmacy for more than a year and has gotten about 200 applications.
The first batch of new hires are expected to start rolling out to stores in the next week.
Sam’s is the biggest employer in the District, and its pharmacy job has long been a staple of DC’s workforce.
The number of jobs is expected to double between now and 2020.
But for many people, a job that pays $30 is still not enough to support themselves.
“You’re kind of on your own with your rent, you’re kind and caring,” said Joanna, who asked that her last name not be used.
“And I don’t want to be in a place where I’m like, ‘I’m not going to have a job, I’m not making enough money, I don.t have a good future.'”
For some workers, a pay raise is the only thing that keeps them going.
“I’m hoping that it can keep people in the industry because they’ve done it for years,” said a pharmacist in the Georgetown neighborhood.
“They’re not going away, they’re just going to get better.”
The company is looking for a mix of pharmacists, lab technicians and technicians in all areas.
The average salary for a pharmacy technician is about $20,000 a year.
Sam is looking to hire more pharmacists over the next year, with openings at about 20 locations, according to a spokesperson.
“We’ve already had a lot of interest in the pharmacy, so we’re just trying to pick people that we think would make a good fit for the company,” Sam said.
“It’s not about the money, it’s about the experience.”
Sam’s said that while the company is open to people with previous pharmacy experience, the average salary is about a quarter of the salary of a full-time pharmacist.
In a statement, Sam’s said it is hiring “top-notch pharmacy technicians who have experience building pharmacy-grade medical devices and who have demonstrated experience with both the technology and clinical development of new products and services.”
A spokesman said that the company has also launched a new marketing campaign called Pharmacy, which is targeting pharmacists in communities with a high number of low-income residents.
The pharmacy job is an opportunity for employees to build a career, learn new skills and expand their network, Sam said in a statement.
“We are grateful to have been chosen to bring new, innovative pharmacy professionals to our employees,” the spokesperson said.
Sam is hiring pharmacists to fill the roles of health and wellbeing associates, lab assistants, office managers, and pharmacy technicians, according the company.
It is the latest job in a long line of opportunities for pharmacists.
