Can you get a job at Netflix as a cloud engineer?
It depends on how much you want to spend on cloud computing.
The streaming service said it hired four new cloud engineers, bringing its total to six.
The company said it’s hiring engineers in the Los Angeles area, New York, Chicago and Austin.
“We are very excited about the new cloud engineering talent we’ve brought on board,” said Scott M. Taylor, chief technology officer at Netflix.
“Our cloud engineering team is one of the best in the industry, and we look forward to expanding this team and making it even better.”
Netflix’s hiring drive is part of a broader hiring drive by the company.
It’s ramping up hiring to help it stay competitive against Amazon, Google and Facebook, said Matt Chayes, chief operating officer of Netflix.
Netflix said it is hiring an additional 5,000 people in the next few months.
“It’s important to note that Netflix’s cloud engineering teams have not yet been trained to code and perform any real-world work,” said Chay, adding that Netflix is looking to bring on as many engineers as possible.
Netflix’s announcement comes just as Amazon announced it has hired its first cloud engineer, Brian Hickey.
He was hired last week, Netflix said.
Netflix has been expanding its cloud engineering ranks since it launched its streaming service in 2015, hiring about 1,400 engineers since then, Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings said.
The firm’s hiring spree is part a larger hiring push by Netflix, which says it has more than 6 million members worldwide and has expanded into more than a dozen countries.
The tech company has more recently added roles to help staff its new service, including one for a virtual assistant to help users navigate its vast catalog of movies and TV shows.
Netflix also said it will hire 10,000 employees over the next year, up from the 7,000 the company hired in the past year.
Netflix plans to pay employees based on the number of hours they work, not the hours they spend in a typical Netflix video, Hastings said last week.
Netflix expects to pay the average employee about $17 an hour in salary and benefits by the end of 2019, with the average wage going up to $19.99 an hour by 2021.
