With more than 10,000 firefighters across the country, Australia’s fire service is a huge and lucrative industry.
The jobless rate of more than 8.4% is the lowest in the world, but Australia has the highest number of firefighters per head of population in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) ranking of 191 countries.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) unemployment rate has been steadily falling since 2014.
Now, the country is on the brink of a historic fire season.

The city has a population of over 13 million people, of whom nearly 8,000 are firefighters.
2/6 The first firefighter to walk on Mars A group of astronauts has walked on the surface of Mars, touching down on the Red Planet for the first time since 2020.
The astronauts were part of a group of six humans who successfully walked on to the red planet in August 2020, becoming the first humans to walk in the red giant’s atmosphere for 12 hours and 40 minutes.
The two men and a woman, who are both Russian cosmonauts, will be the first to walk across the surface.
They will not be the only humans to do so in the coming years, as NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are planning on sending rovers and astronauts to the Red Moon.

The crew of the International Space Station successfully launched the Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft in April 2018, bringing a small amount of supplies back to Earth.
3/6 In 2018, the first-ever female astronaut was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia’s highest civilian honour.
In a video posted on social media, Maj Gen Susan Johnson, a member of the US Army’s Rapid Reaction Command and Commander of US Forces Central Command, said that, in recognition of the extraordinary work women do for their country, she would like to give the Medal of Honor to one woman.
The award was handed out to the woman, Lt Col Amanda P. Scott, who was awarded for extraordinary service during a time of war in Afghanistan.

Read the full statement: US Army 4/6 Australian firefighters are some of the most highly skilled firefighters in the country According to the Australian Firefighters Union, there are more than 9,000 Australian firefighters on duty across the state of Victoria, and around 10,400 in the nation’s south-west.
In 2017, the union’s chief executive, Steve Smith, told ABC Radio’s AM program that, with over 400,000 people in Victoria, “it’s hard to find people who don’t know a fireman”.
5/6 Australians are the world’s largest consumers of firewood Australians spend an average of $1.4 billion a year on firewood, with around $400 million of that going to the fire service.
This is almost twice as much as spending on other goods like pharmaceuticals and electricity.
The cost of fire insurance is another $2.3 billion a decade.
The National Fire Authority, which is part of the Commonwealth Government, also estimates that the average fire service member spends an average $1,700 a year in firefighting expenses.
6/6 There are now more fire engines than police cars In Australia, there were approximately 2,000 fire engines on duty as of the end of 2020, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Fire services have seen a steady increase in funding in recent years, from $1 million in 2012 to more than $1 billion in 2017.
However, the fire services have faced a number major budget cuts in recent times.
There was a 30 per cent cut to the national fire service budget from 2018-19.
The budget also saw the introduction of a two-tier service, where a paramedic and a fire engine were paid the same amount.
The government has said it will reduce the amount of fire trucks available for use, and will reduce staffing levels by around 10 per cent.
However, it has not said whether this will affect the number of fire engines in the service.
